Work Life Balance for Women with the Polarity Power Pair: Tracy Christopherson & Michelle Troseth
Are you tired of feeling like work life balance for women is just a myth? Like no matter how hard you try, you are always choosing between getting things done and actually enjoying your life? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Tracy Christopherson and Michelle Troseth, the Polarity Power Pair, to talk about why that either/or feeling is not a personal failing. It is a thinking pattern. And once you shift it, everything changes.
Key Takeaways
- Recognize that not every tension in your life is a problem to solve — some are polarities to manage
- Understand the difference between problem-solving and polarity thinking so you stop applying the wrong tool
- Identify your preference pole between structure and flexibility and learn how to access the benefits of both
- Use your calendar as a mirror to spot misalignment between your values and your internal operating system
- Take one simple awareness step to start moving toward dynamic balance today
What Is Polarity Thinking and Why Does It Matter for Work Life Balance?
Most of us were taught from a very young age that every problem has a solution. You identify the challenge, you pick the best option, you solve it, and you move on. But Tracy and Michelle explain that some of the most persistent struggles we face are not problems at all. They are polarities.
Polarities are interdependent pairs of values that seem opposite but actually need each other. Think about breathing. You need to inhale to bring in oxygen and exhale to remove carbon dioxide. You cannot choose one and neglect the other. The goal is not to pick a side. The goal is to manage both so you get the benefits of each.
Work life balance for women works the same way. Professional life and personal life are not competing priorities. They are a polarity. And when you over-focus on one at the expense of the other, you feel it. You feel burned out, disconnected, and out of control of your time.
Structure and Flexibility Are Not opposites. They Are Partners.
One of my favorite moments in this conversation is when Tracy gently reframes the word “rigidity.” She points out that the language we use around polarities matters. Calling one pole “rigid” and the other “flexible” already creates a bias. One sounds desirable and the other sounds like something to fix.
When we rename it structure and flexibility, something shifts. Neither one sounds like the enemy anymore. And that is exactly the point.
Tracy and Michelle share that everyone has a preference pole. Some of us are naturally wired toward structure and some toward flexibility. Neither is wrong. But when you cling to your preference pole and resist the other, you miss out on the full benefits of both. And you end up either living in chaos or burning out from over-control.
The good news? You do not have to give up what you value to gain more. That is the power of the both/and mindset.
What Your Calendar Is Really Telling You
Tracy says something in this episode that stopped me in my tracks. She says that if you want to understand your internal operating system, just look at your calendar. It is all right there.
But here is what I want to add to that. Your calendar may not be showing you your values. It may be showing you your misalignment. It may be showing you a default operating system that is running on old beliefs, other people’s priorities, and habits that were never really yours to begin with.
That is why work life balance for women is not just a scheduling problem. It is an identity and awareness problem. And the first step is simply noticing what is actually happening before you try to fix anything.
The First Step Toward Dynamic Balance
If you listened to this episode and thought, “That is me. My calendar does not reflect what I actually value,” here is what Tracy and Michelle suggest you do first.
Spend the next 24 hours in self-observation mode. If someone were following you around with a camera, what would they see? What choices are you making? What are you saying yes to? What is quietly draining your energy?
Just notice. Awareness is where all meaningful change begins. And once you can see the imbalance clearly, you can start to take action that actually sticks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a problem and a polarity? A problem has a solution. You identify the challenge, choose the best option, apply it, and move on. A polarity is an ongoing, interdependent pair of values that both need to be managed over time. There is no finish line and no single solution. Work life balance, for example, is not a problem to solve once. It is a polarity to manage continuously.
What is polarity thinking and how does it help with work life balance for women? Polarity thinking is a framework that helps you recognize when a struggle is not a problem to fix but a tension to manage. For work life balance for women, it means stopping the either/or thinking that forces you to choose between your professional life and your personal life, and shifting into a both/and mindset where you can access the benefits of both without sacrificing one for the other.
What is the both/and mindset? The both/and mindset is the foundation of polarity thinking. Instead of asking “Should I choose structure or flexibility?” you ask “How can I have the benefits of both structure and flexibility?” It is a shift away from binary thinking and toward dynamic balance, where two seemingly opposite values are recognized as equally important and interdependent.
What does my calendar reveal about my work life balance? Your calendar is a reflection of your internal operating system, which includes your beliefs, your identity, and your values. If your calendar feels overwhelming or misaligned, it may not be showing you what you value. It may be showing you where your values and your habits are out of sync. Looking honestly at your calendar is one of the first steps toward reclaiming balance and designing your time with intention.
What is the difference between structure and flexibility in time management? Structure and flexibility are a polarity, meaning they are interdependent and both necessary for effective time management. Structure without flexibility can lead to rigidity and stress when plans change. Flexibility without structure can lead to chaos and lost time. The goal is not to choose one but to dynamically balance both based on the season and demands of your life.
What is the Dynamic Balance Effect® Framework? The Dynamic Balance Effect® Framework was created by Dr. Tracy Christopherson and Michelle Troseth of MissingLogic®. It helps leaders and entrepreneurs use polarity thinking to create dynamic balance between their professional and personal lives. Rather than aiming for a 50/50 split, it focuses on identifying your preference poles, recognizing early warning signs of imbalance, and taking individualized action steps to maintain both/and balance over time.
What is Polarity Intelligence®? Polarity Intelligence® is the ability to recognize, map, and manage polarities in your life, leadership, and business. Developed by Dr. Tracy Christopherson and Michelle Troseth, it is the core framework behind their company MissingLogic® and their book Polarity Intelligence: The Missing Logic in Leadership. It helps leaders stop applying problem-solving thinking to situations that require polarity management, which reduces burnout and improves sustainable performance.
What is the first step to improving work life balance for women? The first step is self-awareness. Spend 24 hours observing yourself without judgment. Notice what choices you are making, what you are saying yes to, and whether your daily actions are aligned with what you truly value. Ask yourself: if someone were following me with a camera today, what would they see? That honest observation is where meaningful, lasting change begins.
