As of today, I have officially spent over 150 hours chatting about all things time management on my podcast.
Let me just say — doing this podcast has been a lesson in time management! From figuring out how to coordinate schedules with my guests, making sure we stayed on track during the interview and handling my own schedule in the meantime… I think it’s safe to say I’ve learned a lot!
Because time management is my jam AND my career, I wanted to chat with you about the time management lessons I’ve learned thanks to podcasting. Maybe you’ll find a couple of gems in here yourself!
Lesson #1: You need a vision.
Results require consistency, and consistency requires commitment. And if you’re going to ask yourself to commit to something, you need to have the vision to commit to.
So much of the time, we want to start something new — a habit, podcast, whatever. But we get insanely frustrated when we don’t see immediate results.
I know I had this moment! When I first launched the podcast, I had a small but loyal following. And yeah, I could have immediately considered myself a failure for not having a huge audience right off the bat (because I wasn’t a celeb or popular Youtuber already)!
But when it comes to seeing RESULTS, you need a vision of what those ideal results will be. For me, I wanted to serve people through my platform. And as cheesy as this is — I can only touch so many lives in person and 1:1. I knew I needed a platform that would allow me to serve tons of people at once. THAT was my vision.
Lesson #2: Results don’t come fast. Or easy.
If you want to reach your vision, I’m just going to tell you right now it’s not going to happen if you take action in spurts. If you’re training for a marathon, you’re not going to help yourself by going on a 10-mile run one day, and then a 5-minute run 6 months later.
You HAVE to consistently build on your progress in order to reach your goal and see results.
I am so proud that my episodes are downloaded 20,000 times per month. Because that’s 20,000 opportunities to help someone create more space and balance in their lives.
But it wasn’t always like that. It’s About Time did NOT look like that from day one. Those 20,000 downloads have only come because I’ve given them time and consistency.
Lesson #3: You have to commit fully.
When I decided to launch this podcast, I dove in headfirst. I knew, from the very first day, that I was going to stick with it for the long haul.
Going into it with that level of commitment has resulted in late nights, early mornings, and more days where I felt like I had no idea what I was doing. But because I committed so deeply, I’ve seen way more success than I ever thought was possible.
Lesson #4: Consistency takes systems.
You can’t just wake up one morning and tell yourself you’re going to run 5 miles a day before work… and then do nothing.
You HAVE to create systems to make your 5-mile runs happen by setting you to stay consistent. Things like laying out your running clothes the night before, and putting your phone across the room, so you don’t roll over and hit snooze. You need systems in place that make consistency easy.
Systems don’t have to be complicated. They can be so simple! It’s all about being as streamlined as possible to help make sure consistency is practically second nature.
Systems are the key to outsourcing
Now, I know that some of you are the only person doing things at home or at work. You might think you don’t need a system in place because you’re the only one. But y’all, you don’t WANT to be the only one doing things forever, right?
You need systems that make it possible and EASY to outsource without causing tons of stress and headaches.
When I first started the podcast, I knew that one day I wanted to be able to have someone write the episodes, edit, and post them. I wanted to be able to step back from so many of the things I found tedious or time-consuming.
And BECAUSE I put systems in place early on, I’ve been able to do that! For example, I have an automation for podcast guests. When they book a time to do their interview, they automatically receive a welcome email. And on the flip side, my husband gets an auto-Slack message telling him that someone’s just booked their guest spot, so he can start getting them onboarded!
Now, I know lots of you out there aren’t podcasters or business owners. But you can still automate pieces of your life! If you have a pet sitter, a babysitter, a house manager… Do you have to give the same verbal instructions every time? Maybe you feel like you forget things, and then they call you in the middle of lunch. Or you just simply feel like you’re having to do so much extra work to delegate something out that it might be easier if you just did it yourself.
This is where an onboarding system comes in handy! All you need to do is ask yourself: what does this person need to know in order to be successful?
And going off that point, the last lesson I’ve learned…
Lesson #5: Get clear on the things that only you can do.
So much of the time, we get so overwhelmed because our to-do list is full of stuff that HAS to get done — and we feel like we have to do all of it, or else it doesn’t count.
That is SO not true! The point of having a podcast is not for me to sit on my computer for hours to design graphics. That’s not something only I can do.
The point of the podcast is to impact lives! That doesn’t happen if I’m wasting all my time doing busy work.
But I AM the only one who can interview a guest or record a podcast. I can’t outsource that.
Getting clear on what only you can do allows you to get crystal clear on the things that you can outsource.
Know what the highest and best use of your time is… and put your energy THERE.
Let’s take it even further!
Wow! Looking back on how much I’ve learned in the last 150 episodes is kind of shocking. It’s so great to put these lessons out there like that.
