Today, we’re chatting about a topic that just about anyone can relate to: how to bounce back when life throws you curveballs.

Because the truth is, life doesn’t just occasionally throw you curveballs. Life IS a curveball. So knowing how to stay calm and navigate a problem when your plans are upended is essential. Recently, life threw me a major curveball, and I realized I have a method for handling the chaos calmly: The CURVE Method.

When Life Throws You Curveballs: My Story

Let me set the scene for you. It was a regular Tuesday morning, and I was just about to dive into my first meeting of the day when I got the dreaded call from school. You know the one. The call that makes your heart sink and your mind race. There was a lice outbreak at my daughter’s school.

So, what did I do? Well, I had to cancel all of my meetings, pull my other daughter out of camp, and come up with a completely new game plan for the day. Which could have completely derailed me and set me up for having a terrible day.

But instead, I decided to turn the day into a party. Yep, you heard that right. We picked up Happy Meals, and as soon as we got home, we watched the Bluey episode “Nits.” The girls loved it! They laughed, and it made the whole situation a lot less scary.

Then, we watched Tangled while the “nitpicker” combed through my 3-year-old’s hair. We called it a Nit Picking Party. It sounds silly, but it worked. The girls were happy, and it made the day so much more bearable.

Here’s the thing: despite the chaos, I was surprisingly calm. And it got me thinking… Why was I so calm? How did I manage to stay cool when my day was turned upside down?

That’s when I realized that I have a little method I use whenever life throws a curveball my way. I call it the CURVE method, and today, I’m excited to share it with you. It’s all about focusing on what you can Control, Understanding the situation, identifying Resources, determining what’s Vital, and Enlisting help.

In this episode, we’re talking about:

  • How to use The CURVE Method to stay calm and in control when chaos strikes
  • Why quickly grasping and prioritizing the heart of any problem is essential
  • What powerful resources you can tap into at your fingertips
  • How to rally the right support to tackle challenges head-on

So, grab a cup of coffee, get cozy, and let’s chat about how you can use the CURVE method to stay calm and collected, no matter what life throws at you.

When Life Throws You Curveballs: How to Use The CURVE Method

Alright, now that we’ve covered what the CURVE method is, let’s dive deeper into each step. I want to share some practical methods and ideas for implementing each part of CURVE, so you can use this approach effectively whenever life throws a curveball your way.

Control

First, let’s talk about Control. When you’re hit with an unexpected situation, it’s crucial to focus on what you can control. This could be your mindset, your immediate actions, or even your environment.

Mindset: Start by taking a few deep breaths to calm your mind. Practice positive self-talk by reminding yourself that you’ve handled difficult situations before and you can handle this one too.

Immediate Actions: Make a quick list of things you can do immediately. This could be as simple as making a phone call, setting up a temporary workspace, or even just cleaning up a small area to give yourself a sense of order.

Environment: Create a controlled environment. If possible, find a quiet space where you can think clearly. Organize your space to minimize distractions and help you focus on the task at hand.

These small steps can help you regain a sense of control and prevent you from feeling overwhelmed.

Understand

Next is Understand. To move forward effectively, you need to understand the situation fully. This involves gathering information and gaining clarity on what’s happening.

Ask Questions: Start by asking yourself key questions. What exactly is the problem? What are the immediate consequences? What information do I need to move forward?

Research: Use reliable sources to gather information. This could be through online research, reading articles, or watching instructional videos. Be sure to cross-check information from multiple sources to ensure its accuracy.

Consult Experts: Don’t hesitate to reach out to professionals or people who have dealt with similar situations. They can provide insights and advice that you might not find through your own research.

Understanding the situation helps you feel more equipped to handle it and reduces the fear of the unknown.

Resources

Once you have a good grasp of the situation, it’s time to identify your Resources. Knowing what tools, people, and information you have at your disposal can make a huge difference.

Make a List: Create a list of resources you already have. This could include books, websites, contacts, or even physical tools that could help.

Reach Out: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s contacting a friend who’s been through a similar experience, reaching out to a professional, or joining an online community, there are often more resources available to you than you might think.

Utilize Technology: Use apps and technology to your advantage. There are countless apps designed to help with organization, time management, and specific problems like health issues or home repairs.

By leveraging your resources, you can handle the situation more effectively and with less stress.

Vital

The next step is to determine what’s Vital. This is all about prioritizing and focusing on the most important tasks that need your attention right away.

Identify Priorities: Make a list of everything that needs to be done, then rank them by importance. Ask yourself which tasks will have the most significant impact if addressed immediately.

Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to non-essential tasks or delegate them to others. This allows you to concentrate on what truly matters.

Focus on Impact: Consider what actions will create the most positive change or prevent further complications. This might mean focusing on immediate safety concerns, essential repairs, or critical communication.

By focusing on the vital tasks, you ensure that your energy is spent where it’s needed most, rather than being spread too thin.

Enlist

Finally, we have Enlist. Remember, you don’t have to handle everything on your own. Enlisting help can lighten the load and bring in expertise you might lack.

Delegate Tasks: Identify tasks that can be delegated to others. This could be asking family members to take on specific chores, or enlisting colleagues to help with work-related tasks.

Seek Professional Help: Sometimes, professional help is the best route. This could mean hiring a service, consulting a specialist, or getting legal advice, depending on the situation.

Build a Support Network: Develop a network of friends, family, and colleagues who you can call on in times of need. Make sure to offer your support in return, creating a reciprocal relationship.

Enlisting help not only makes the situation more manageable but also brings different perspectives and skills to the table, often leading to better solutions.

When Life Throws You Curveballs

By implementing these steps—Control, Understand, Resources, Vital, and Enlist—you can turn a chaotic situation into a manageable one. Remember, it’s not about having all the answers immediately, but about taking systematic, thoughtful steps to regain your footing and move forward effectively.
